Diary of a Divorcee – Chapter One – Sharon Segal Law Firm
“It was over for me long before it really was over”
I can’t point to one moment.
There was no explosion.
Not a scene of betrayal.
Not a letter discovered by chance.
It was a routine.
Coffee in the morning. Silences.
Looks that were spared.
A small pain that turned into a thin layer of skin.
And slowly, without noticing – we were no longer “us.”
We were just two people living next door, not together.
In those days, I still convinced myself that this was a period.
That it will pass.
You should try it for the kids.
But inside I knew:
It was over for me long before it really was over.
One evening, as we lay side by side, I looked at him.
And the heart was quiet.
Too quiet.
No anger, no longing, no love.
Just quiet.
That night I realized – I’m no longer there.
And when you’re no longer there, any attempt to stay becomes a lie.
And this is what hurt the most:
Living within an emotional lie that you yourself no longer believe.
The next morning, I made myself some coffee,
I sat on the balcony, looking at the light,
And for the first time in a long time – I breathed.
I really breathed.
Not because everything worked out.
But because I realized that the decision had already been made within me.
From here it’s just a matter of time.
Of courage.
of action.
People think divorce starts with a conversation.
In practice, they start much earlier.
Inside the heart.
When the soul realizes that something in it can no longer continue.
And it’s not easy.
It’s feeling guilty.
It’s to fear every step.
It’s fear of hurting the children, disappointing the parents, not knowing what will happen.
But amidst all of this – there is also one quiet truth:
I choose myself.
If you’re reading this, maybe you’re right there right now.
On the verge.
Between fear and decision.
Between the broken heart and the hope that maybe it’s possible otherwise.
I’m writing to you not because I have all the answers,
But because I was there.
And I want you to know – you are not alone.
And you can get through this too.
And to be whole.
And to discover a woman who has always been there – just too quiet until now.
In the next chapters I will write about the children.
On the felt.
About the first time I stood in front of a lawyer.
About the tears in front of the mirror.
And about the small personal victory – when I discovered that I was capable.
This is not a diary of pain.
It’s a growth journal.
