Diary of a Divorcee – Chapter Three

“The first time I stood in front of a lawyer”

I didn’t sleep the night before.
I lay in bed, looking at the ceiling,
And my thoughts gave me no rest.

What am I going to say?
How will he look at me?
What if he asks me things I don’t know the answer to?
What if he tells me it’s too early?
Or vice versa – is it too late?

I woke up in the morning with a pounding heart.
I wore a white shirt and simple jeans.
I put on a little makeup – so they wouldn’t see how tired I was.
I got into the car.
And I knew –
I’m going to talk about the end of what I once thought was forever.

The clinic was quiet.
The door opened.
And then –
The lawyer smiled at me.

Not too wide a smile. Not artificial.
Calm smile. Professional.
But mostly – containing.

We sat down.
He asked me how I was feeling.
And for the first time in a while – someone really asked.

Not “What happened?”.
Not “Who is to blame?”.
But –
“What do you need?”

I spoke.
At first, carefully.
And then louder.
And finally – I just spilled it.

And I ended the meeting with a piece of paper, a pen, and an action plan.
But more than that –
I left with a sense of relief.

Not because everything worked out.
But because I finally felt like someone was in this with me.
I am not alone.
There is a way.

Many women are afraid of this stage.
I know.
I was scared too.

But in retrospect – that was the moment when I came back to myself.
As soon as I said what hurt me, he stopped managing me.
And as soon as someone professional told me:
“There are solutions. You don’t have to deal with it alone.”
I could breathe.

If you are still unsure whether to seek counseling –
I write to you from the heart:
Do it.
Even just to know what your options are.
Even if you don’t make a decision at that moment.

Because knowledge is power.
And a good lawyer is not just someone who will write you a lawsuit.
He is someone who will accompany you, fight for you, and organize the storm into calm.

In the following chapters I will tell you how I dealt with the fear of stigma,
About the first time I went to court,
And about how I rediscovered my voice.

Diary of a Divorcee – Chapter Three.
The episode where I began to take responsibility – and not just absorb reality.
