The days after the divorce

Tips for coping with the first days after divorce

A divorce process may take time and be accompanied by many difficulties, both emotional, financial and practical.

It doesn’t matter whether the breakup was your initiative or not, whether things were conducted respectfully or whether one of the parties decided to smear their partner along the way, it’s a complex struggle that requires recalculating the route, especially if small children are involved in the whole story.

Then, after you’re finally done with the painful and exhausting divorce procedure and it seems like you can breathe a sigh of relief, additional issues surface and arise.

The first few days after are not necessarily all honey and roses as men and women who have divorced tend to describe, and everyone needs a different duration and nature of recovery.

In the review before you, I bring Editor Justice Sharon Segal Practical tips that will help you cope with those days and gradually heal the wounds, so that hopefully you too can recover from the blow and move on when the right moment comes.

Digest the breakup and give things time.

The first recommendation for the days after a breakup is to let things sink in. The (understandable) desire to speed things up and adapt to a fast-paced situation is all well and good, but In the case of divorce There are no shortcuts and it is better to drive wisely and thoughtfully.

Take a moment to process the feeling, surround yourself with friends and family who love you and care for you, understand what the new arrangement with the children means, Joint custody  Or exclusively and try to formulate a financial strategy that will allow you and the children to continue living the way you were used to.

Beware of impulsive behavior

Reckless steps inevitably lead to mistakes in the end, and this applies to every area of our lives, especially after breakups.

Don’t rush into bed with someone else, don’t lose your temper with alcohol, cigarettes, or going out and forget that you’re a father, don’t quit your job, don’t invest money in unsafe and big bets, don’t act impulsively that involves hasty and thoughtless decisions.

Such behavior may harm you emotionally and financially and can even lead to parental alienation, a familiar phenomenon in which children choose to distance themselves from one of their parents following a divorce.

A place and expression for your own needs

It is true that in divorce, the best interests of the children are paramount, but we should not forget that the mental health of the parents is also important. Therefore, it is worth being sensitive to the issue and finding the balance between parent and person, a balance that is often missed when couples separate and the family unit in its old, familiar form falls apart.

A good way to maintain balance and maintain sanity is to technically divide your time. When are you with the children and invest in them and, accordingly, when you are alone, know how to dedicate time to yourself and the things that do you good, such as evening studies, a new class, a sport you loved and stopped doing, and so on.

Keep an open mind to opportunities.

Chapter 2 will most likely not arrive two days after the divorce, but in time, dates, more or less serious, and new acquaintances will increase and become part of your daily routine.

The more you keep an open mind and don’t refuse opportunities just because you’ve been hurt/hurt/don’t think you’ll be able to love or be a lover again/you don’t believe in the institution of marriage anymore, and so on and so forth, the more life will smile at you and you will gain new and positive experiences in your relationship and in general.

Don’t be ashamed to ask for help from those around you!

The fifth and final tip is to talk about the difficulty. Keeping everything bottled up will literally make your stomach explode, and that’s exactly why we recommend that you share the crisis you’re going through with friends, family, or professionals.

In this context, it is worth noting that women and men react differently to breakups, and of course, coping is individual. However, despite the above, a listening ear will certainly help, no matter your gender, age, or how painful or “simple” the breakup was for you.
